Seniors' Wellness Program Celebrates Three Years

Now in its third year, the Seniors' Wellness Program - a collaboration between Associates in Internal Medicine (AIM Clinic) and The Armory Foundation - continues to bring together older adults in Northern Manhattan for weekly fitness and health education. Every Tuesday, first-year medical residents from General Medicine present on health topics relevant to seniors, while Thursday sessions feature third-year residents leading open forum discussions. Since its launch, the program has drawn more than 2,000 participants, with weekly sessions consistently welcoming over 450 seniors, hosted by the Armory Foundation.
The program has sparked powerful connections. At the August 21 session, Dr. Bryan Wang was warmly greeted by a patient he had recommended to the program earlier this year: “That’s my doctor; he sent me here in January and I love it! I am so happy he told me to come.”
Volunteers have also played a vital role in building trust and accessibility. Over the past year, Jake Benoit, a second-year VP&S student, has become a familiar face to the seniors. By welcoming and introducing residents to the seniors and supporting the flow of sessions, he has earned their respect and affection. Some of his most meaningful exchanges have come through practicing Spanish with participants, turning language learning into a bridge of trust and cultural connection.
This summer, SYEP participant Ana Rivera strengthened the program’s inclusivity by translating slides, preparing bilingual handouts, and providing live interpretation during both Tuesday and Thursday sessions. Her warmth and dedication ensured that every senior could engage fully, regardless of language. As one staff member shared, Ana “won the hearts of every senior,” leaving a lasting impression on both participants and residents alike.
As the Seniors' Wellness Program enters its third year, it continues to grow as a model of community partnership, resident education, and senior wellness—showcasing the power of collaboration between CUIMC, its students, and Northern Manhattan’s older adult community.
