Plaza Happenings

Haven Plaza, located at 168th Street and Haven Avenue, is a vibrant public space open to the community. The plaza hosts a wide range of programming, activities, and events throughout the year and serves as a welcoming place to relax and connect with neighbors.

Emergency Medicine Interest Group leads CPR & Narcan training on September 6, 2025. 70 participants from the Washington Heights/Inwood and CUIMC community participated in a hands-on practice of basic life skills across multiple stations, where participants leaned when to perform CPR, recognize overdoses, and administer the medication.

Inspiring the next generation of innovators

Over a thousand elementary schoolkids learned about stem cells, brains, bacteria, and more at Columbia University Irving Medical Center's second annual Curious Minds Science Zone at Haven Plaza on September 18. The event was hosted by the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging in collaboration with the Office of Academic and Community Partnerships and the Stem Cell Initiative.

Bringing people together to celebrate culture and share traditions

Columbia University Irving Medical Center recognized Hispanic Heritage Month with a celebration on Haven Plaza for students, faculty, staff, and community members on October 9th. Hosted by the LatinX Employee Resource Group in collaboration with the Office of Academic and Community Partnerships, the event provided attendees the opportunity to learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month and honor the accomplishments made by the Hispanic community. 

Community members participate in an outdoor group fitness and dance activity at Haven Plaza on the CUIMC campus, led by an instructor, with participants raising their arms and moving together in front of campus buildings.

Seniors engaged in wellness and physical activities

 The Seniors’ Wellness Program – a collaboration between Associates in Internal Medicine (AIM Clinic) and The Armory Foundation – continues to bring together older adults in Northen Manhattan for weekly fitness and health education. Every Tuesday, first-year medical residents from General Medicine present on health topics relevant to seniors, while Thursday sessions feature third-year residents leading open forum discussions. Since its launch, the program has drawn 2,000 participants, with weekly sessions of over 450 seniors actively participating in the program.
